For the past few weeks most of you have seen my rage filled texts posts about Katy Perry and her recent existence in the #Goth tag on this site.

Well, Now that my initial rage has cooled I can now write this with a calm manner as to why it bothers me.

For starters I have never liked Katy Perry. I never liked her the moment I heard “I kissed a girl.” As a person who identifies as bisexual I felt slightly offended at how overly sexualised she portrayed being a bisexual or homosexual woman to be and gave an unrealistic impression on those like me. I also never liked how obnoxious and selfish she seemed or how much of a hypocrite she was.

Now, in recent weeks I have seen her make her way into the Goth tag here on Tumblr. Now, normally I would ignore such stupidity and move on, but it seems the media is starting to get in on this. This bothers me a bit because the media is partially the reason it’s so hard to be in the Gothic Subculture. I have enough problems trying to educate budding baby bats about the subculture and cast away the bullshit stereotypes. I have got into countless arguments with ignorant people who are under the impression that if they are Goth they are whiny and angst ridden teenagers who worship Satan and that Evanescence, Korn, Nightwish, and Within Temptation are Gothic Rock. I really don’t want a misogynistic pop star to further the negative image Goth has in popular culture.

This deeply offends me for many reasons. For starts she has always came off to me as ignorant and rude to those who are different. I’m under the impression she’s using the Gothic Subculture as a ploy for more attention and belittling those who are a member along the way.

It doesn’t help she has no knowledge of the Gothic Subculture, its roots, or its music and most likely does not care. She probably couldn’t even name any Gothic Rock musicians let alone know who Siousxie, Peter Murphy, Andrew Eldritch, or Robert Smith (to name a few) are. Merely acting the same as the mallgoths and hipsters who dress this way because it’s ‘edgy’ and ‘cool’ wthout bothering to learn about the subculture and why it means so much to many people. Not only that is the media, as well as Katy Perry herself, are styling her as a ‘Gothic Goddess.’

I’m sorry…but no.

Katy Perry get away from our subculture. You cause enough problems as it is.

You aren’t being original and you aren’t being cute.

You are making fun or a group of people who do not conform to your narrow minded views. That is not cool.

You are not a Goth and will never be one.

You can dislike The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie, etc. and still be Goth if you know of them and respect them for their contribution to the subculture. Not liking all of the music won’t make you less Goth if you respect them.

For example: I don’t like Nina Hagen.
